The Whistleblower Protection Act, Evaluated By SEC Whistleblowers

By Bob Oliver

There are certain acts and laws which serve to help SEC whistleblowers. Just as importantly, they work to protect said individuals, which is great for those who may be fearful about their employment or personal safety in general. In order to expand on this idea, I believe that it is important to go over the Whistleblower Protection Act. If you're curious to know how this can help the aforementioned individuals, here are a few details to keep in mind.

The Whistleblower Protection Act, for those who aren't in the know, is a law that helps to protect workers in federal government sectors. Specifically, they are able to disclose information about illegal activity inside of organizations, without the fear of being fired or let go from their positions. For many SEC whistleblowers, this is one of the biggest concerns to talk about. Fortunately, there are other details to consider, as told by authorities like Whistleblowers Against Fraud.

In 1989, the WPA was put into effect by Congress. This was done so that SEC whistleblowers, regardless of where they worked, would be protected against potential retaliation from their employers. What this means is that if someone came under fire, because of their actions related to this topic, they would not find themselves out of work. However, seeing as how there are still those who suffer because of these sorts of endeavors, one has to wonder why this remains an issue.

A lack of knowledge may be the biggest enemy that comes with punishment which SEC whistleblowers receive. For example, if you go into a retail job and it's only your first week, you're not going to know all of the guidelines which workers should adhere to. The same can be said for the aforementioned men and women and what, exactly, the WPA has to offer. If this is learned about, early on, a lesser degree of concern may be seen.

No one can argue with the fact that guidance should be set in place for situations like these. The men and women involved in this type of work should protect themselves but without the knowledge of rules which exist, how can they go about doing so? Fortunately, this is why it's important to learn about the concept known as the WPA. If you'd like to know what this is all about, there's nothing wrong with researching further and seeing what's out there.
